Trip Overview

Ghorepani Poonhill Trek is a less than a week-long trek to the highlands of the Annapurna to Ghorepani and Poon Hill. This lets the trekkers experience trekking by attractive peak scenery, beautiful Gurung village, thick rhododendron forests, and sub-tropical valleys, all set in the Annapurna region together with the attractive Machapuchare (FishTail Peak) influencing the skyline. From the top of Poon Hill (3,210m/10,53 ft) which lies above Ghorepani Village, the trekkers can acquire amazing sunrise views across the Annapurna massif, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Hiunculi, and Machhapuchhre (6,993m).

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trekking, also popularly known as Annapurna Sunrise Trekking, or Annapurna Panorama Trekking, is one of the most popular and relatively easy treks that meander through the beautiful ethnic villages of the Annapurna Region. Invigorating through some rhododendron forests, Poon Hill Trekking in Nepal will let you feel the Himalayan Panorama while providing you the opportunities to get close to the local Culture.

This trek offers the trekkers an opportunity to submerge themselves in nature, beauty, and appealing culture in one of the world’s most beautiful regions. This tour generally starts with a drive from Pokhara to Ulleri via Tikhedhunga. After reaching Tikhedhunga, the trekkers will move to Ghorepani. On the way, they get the opportunity to visit local villages and communicate with the people to acquire a perception of their life and culture. This trek also rewards the trekkers with amazing views of the Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, and Hiunchuli, and also the first peak of Dhaulagiri. They will continue to trek up to Ghorepani – the location for that day.

Early the next morning, they move to Poon Hill to view the esteemed sunrise across the snow-capped mountains. From Poon Hill, the trekkers will acquire amazing views of glaciers, and several peaks – that involves Hiunchuli, Annapurna South to Annapurna l (8,097m/26,566ft) Gangapurna, Khangsar Kang, Annapurna lll, Dhaulagiri (8,167m/26,795ft), Machhapuchhre. Since the landscapes from Poon Hill are exceptional, Poon Hill is a favorite spot for several photographers. The trekkers will also take some time to soak in the original beauty at Poon Hill and can take pictures. After returning from Poon Hill, they will carry on their trek to Tadapani.

They will be following the track that will take them by the rhododendron forests. At the time they reach Tadapani, they will realize that this village also offers them an opportunity to appreciate the immense Annapurna Mountains. The next day, they will begin their trek from Tadapani to reach Jhinu Danda. Once more, they will be passing by rhododendrons, bamboo, and oak tree forests. Prior to reaching Jhinu Danda, they will be crossing by a pleasant settlement known as Chomrong. There are hot springs all over Jhinu Danda, and they will take their time and submerge themselves in the hot springs. After that, the next day will be the final day on the trek route. They will wake up at Jhinu Danda and trek to Siwa / Ghandruk Phedi. From Ghandruk Phedi, they return to Pokhara on a route that crosses attractive countryside. The following morning, they will leave Pokhara by available transportation by air to Kathmandu.

Poon Hill Trek Difficulty

The Poon Hill trek is categorized as a moderately demanding trek. Appropriate for trekkers with a reasonable level of physical fitness, covering a total distance of about 30-40 miles (50-65 kilometers) depending upon the selected route.

The trek normally spans 3 to 5 days, with each day trekking durations aligning about 5 to 6 hours. Trekkers will travel elevations ranging from around 8,000 feet (2,440 meters) to the highest of 10,500 feet (3,200 meters) at Poon Hill. At the time certain parts of the trek can be challenging, significantly at the time of uphill, and elevation might pose a challenge, most trekkers with enough fitness level should be able to accomplish the trek without particular challenges if they are appropriately prepared and acclimatized.

To enhance preparedness, it is advised that trekkers be occupied in physical training and cardiovascular exercises before undertaking the trek. This will build stamina and patience, assuring a more delightful experience.

Poon Hill Trek Altitude

The Poon Hill Trek reaches a highest elevation of 3,210 meters (10,531 feet) at the summit of Poon Hill. Hence, the average altitude together with the trek is about 2,500-3,000 meters (8,200-9,800 feet), which makes it a relatively simple and achievable trek for most trekkers. The slow ascent and well-defined trail also make it a proper choice for beginners or those who are new to trekking in Nepal.

Hence, it’s still significant to appropriately acclimate to the elevation and take significant precautions to avoid altitude sickness, like drinking sufficient water, taking rest breaks, and ascending gradually.
