Trip Overview

Island Peak, also called Imja Tse, is in the upper Everest region, lying basically in the shadow of Everest and the dominating Lhotse and Nuptse walls. The peak was named ‘Island Peak’ because of its striking place in the center of the Chhukung valley, like an island on a sea of ice. It was renamed ‘Imja Tse’ in the early 80s, whereas its original name is still more famous. Inherently, it is a moderately more challenging climb compared to Mera Peak, even though it is lower in elevation. This trek on the other hand embraces Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar as sections of the acclimatization procedure. Most lodgings during this tour are lodge based, but trekkers still are required to camp at Island Peak base camp and beyond.

After visiting Kathmandu, the trekkers will fly to Lukla and start trekking up the famous well-known route against Namche Bazaar. Ascending slowly, through rest ways to support trekkers acclimatize; they take in the attractive and serene Thyangboche Monastery, through picture-postcard landscapes of the Everest massif and Ama Dablam. Carrying on, they will arrive at Dingboche, Lobuche and Gorek Shep. They will explore the historical place of Everest Base Camp, and scale Kala Pattar (5545m) for more brilliant landscapes of Everest and her neighboring mountains. By now well acclimatized, the team will drop down to Dingboche and then head in an easterly direction together with the Chukung valley.

The team’s last accommodation is at the Chukung seasonal settlement; from here it is a 3 hours walk to Island Peak Base Camp (5090m), where the team will set their tents. A day’s instruction on climbing methods will be provided either at Chukhung or Base Camp. The ascent to high camp (5700m) is vertical and dusty but not significantly challenging. The trekker will retire early that night, and begin for the summit by torchlight about 4am. The first leg includes climbing a rocky part over boulders, up till the team arrives on snow slants.

During the Gokyo Everest Base Camp-Island Peak donning proper equipment (crampons, harness etc.) and using fixed ropes where essential, the team travels the crevassed glacier, coming to a slant snow and ice ramp against the end needing the use of prussics or jumars to ascend. Lastly there is a ridge-line to walk, to arrive at the summit. The team reward is marvelous sense of achievement as the team survey a stunning landscapes: Lhotse Shar (8400m); Makalu (8463m) in the east; Baruntse (7201m); Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Tawoche in the southeast; and a amazing close-up of the Lhotse and Nuptse rockwall (the longest rock face in the planet). On return the team backtrack their steps back to Lukla. They spend an evening of celebration and fly back to Kathmandu.
