Trip Overview

The upper Mustang area was launched for treks and tours in the year 1992. Matter of fact, Mustang was the final prohibited kingdom within Nepal, and it was detached for hundreds of years, thereby creating its own diverse culture and tradition. This region is filled with its past and holy monuments, and its diverse topography varies from other regions of Nepal as it lies in the rain shadow of the mountain ranges. Topographically, it is a part of the Tibetan upland, and because of this, its culture is similar to that of Tibetan rather than Nepali.

In Upper Mustang, the trekkers will find ancient caves, religious fossil rocks, dry land, and cliffs. Lo Manthang, the historical capital of Upper Mustang, is a small town with about 150 houses, a palace, and a monastery known as Lhakhang which is about 200 years old. Mustang lies in and around the Annapurna Conservation Area. so the trekkers can hike to Upper Mustang, can witness gorgeous sights of the Himalayas – they involve Dhaulagiri (8167m), Annapurna l (8091m), and Manaslu (8,163m). The tour starts through a drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara at the time experiencing the views of peaks, traditional villages, terraced fields, and the blustering Trisuli and Maryandi Rivers.

Pokhara is the visitor capital of Nepal. Here, the trekkers or visitors can witness the views of different lakes and Himalayan peaks – including Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, and Lamjung Himal. Matter of fact, the trekkers can view the reflection of these peaks in the lakes. The next day, the hikers will fly from Pokhara to Jomsom – the headquarters of Mustang. After landing at Jomsom, they will be hiking to Kagbeni – the doorway to Upper Mustang.

After spending a night at Kagbeni the hikers will hike for the Chela. The trek areas can be windy and filled with dust in the air, so the hikers are required to have sunglasses and face masks. From Chele, the hikers will move for Syangboche following a track that crosses a settlement known as Elko Bhatti and Taklam High Pass (3,625m / 11,940 ft).

Hikers will be passing through several destinations like Yamda La Pass (3,845m / 12,655 ft) reaching Gelling, Tamagau, and lastly Ghami. The destinations like Tsarang, Lo-Manthang, Chuhusang, Muktinath. Muktinath is a general religious place for Hindus and Buddhists and hosts 108 bathing spouts.  From Muktinath, the hikers will move to Jomsom, which marks the last day on the trails. After spending a night in Jomsom the hikers will catch an early morning flight to Pokhara. The hikers can select to visit Pokhara for one day or fly back to Kathmandu on the same day. If the hikers select to spend a day at Pokhara, they will return to Kathmandu on a tourist bus.

The weather is the decisive component in hiking to Upper Mustang. People hike to Upper Mustang all over the year, but the trek is simple and more enjoyable in certain seasons. If the hikers are seeking for amenity and landscapes, summer and autumn hikes are the best. At the time of winter season, most inhabitants leave Upper Mustang to escape cold and snow.

March to May (Spring)

Spring (March-May) is a season at the time mountain lovers and travel fanatics come to hike to Upper Mustang in huge numbers. In this season, the climate is mild, with daytime temperatures within 16 to 22 degree Celsius. Hence, nights are colder since the temperature can decrease below 0 degrees Celsius.

 June to August (Summer)

June to August is the summer season in Nepal, but it also coincides with the monsoon. Hence, there is no monsoon in Upper Mustang which makes summer an excellent season for hiking to Upper Mustang. On an August full moon day, the inhabitants at Upper Mustang observe a horse festival. The temperature in the summer ranges from 16 to 25 degrees Celsius. The night temperature ranges from -3 to 0 degrees Celsius.

September to November (Autumn)

 Like in other regions in Nepal, the autumn skies in the Upper Mustang are clear, offering great landscapes of the peaks. But afternoons can be windy. The daytime temperature ranges from 12 to 20 degrees Celsius, at the time nights are cold at -8 to -4 degrees Celsius.

December to February (Winter)

The hiking season is over by November. The villagers will migrate to other regions to escape the cold, so the guest houses are closed. Furthermore, that snow surrounds the trails making treks nearly not impossible.

Day 14: Trek to Jomsom

Day 15: Fly back to Pokhara and sightseeing around Lakeside.

Day 16: Drive to Kathmandu by tourist bus at 7:30am and transfer to hotel.

 

Alternative trail via Yara, Luri Gompa, Tangge and Muktinath.

Day 11: Trek to Yara.

Day 12: Excursion Luri Gompa and around, back to Yara.

Day 13: Trek to Tangge 3240m. 5-6 hours walk.

Day 14: Trek to Paha (4200m). 4-5 hours walk.

Day 16: Trek to Muktinath (3760m) 6-7 hours walk. .

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu
